Auma is sitting with the basket weavers when war breaks out. In the chaos, her daughter is killed and she is abducted. 7 year’s later she returns home with a son. Her husband, Okello though in a relationship with another woman, lets them stay. A few miles away Effrem, one of the rebels who held her captive also attempts to rebuild his life. Auma soon finds refuge among the basket weavers, who like her are dishonored rape victims while Okello struggles to keep a secret from her. Effrem’s hope of a life without war dies when his old General comes for him. Meanwhile Okello’s mistress reveals his devastating secret to Auma. Enraged, Auma steals Okello’s gun and confronts Effrem, the father of her son. Effrem uses the gun to kill himself, Auma returns to her father’s home and Okello is forced to win her back.
